Zelensky calls for more pressure on Russia after overnight attacks
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy addresses lawmakers as he presents the so-called 'Victory Plan' during a parliament session, amid Russia's attack on Ukraine, in Kyiv, Ukraine October 16, 2024.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for increased international pressure on Russia following a series of deadly overnight attacks across Ukraine. In a statement, Zelensky emphasized that the current level of pressure on Russia is insufficient, as evidenced by the ongoing and escalating airstrikes targeting Ukrainian cities.

The recent assaults have been particularly devastating. In Kyiv, a Russian missile strike resulted in the death of one person and injuries to three others, causing fires that damaged non-residential buildings and vehicles. Additionally, the Mykolaiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi, and Cherkasy regions were subjected to attacks, further highlighting the widespread nature of the bombardments.

These incidents follow a particularly harrowing attack in Kryvyi Rih, Zelensky’s hometown, where a Russian ballistic missile struck a playground, killing 19 people, including nine children, and injuring 72 others. The youngest victim was a three-month-old baby. The strike caused extensive damage to residential buildings, vehicles, and local infrastructure.

In response to these events, Zelensky has urged Western allies to intensify their efforts in holding Russia accountable. He criticized the current measures as inadequate and called for more robust actions to deter further aggression. Zelensky’s appeals come amid reports of ongoing diplomatic engagements, including discussions involving U.S. officials and Russian envoys, aimed at addressing the escalating conflict.
