US proposes new Gaza ceasefire to Hamas via Qatar
Smoke rises following an explosion in North Gaza, as seen from the Israeli side of the Israel-Gaza border, March 25, 2025.

The United States has presented a new proposal to Hamas through Qatari mediators, aiming to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and facilitate the release of hostages, including American citizen Edan Alexander. This initiative seeks to break the current stalemate in negotiations and address the escalating violence in the region.

The proposal suggests that Hamas release Edan Alexander in exchange for a statement from President Trump calling for calm in Gaza and the resumption of broader ceasefire discussions. U.S. and Israeli officials acknowledge the uncertainty surrounding Hamas’s acceptance of this offer.

This initiative seeks to address the escalating violence following the breakdown of a previous ceasefire on March 18, which led to renewed hostilities and significant casualties. Israeli airstrikes have resulted in the deaths of multiple Palestinians, and the conflict has caused severe humanitarian issues, including widespread displacement and shortages of essential resources among Gaza’s 2.3 million residents.

The U.S. has been actively engaging with regional partners, pressuring Egypt and Qatar to encourage Hamas to release hostages and agree to a ceasefire. Qatari and Egyptian officials recently met with Hamas representatives in Doha to discuss potential solutions.
