The United States has announced the relocation of its military personnel and equipment from Jasionka Airport near Rzeszów, Poland—a key logistics hub for aid to Ukraine—to other locations within Poland. This move aims to optimize U.S. military operations and enhance support for allies and partners.
The decision follows months of assessment and planning in coordination with Poland and NATO allies. While U.S. forces will reduce their presence at Jasionka, the facility will continue its role in facilitating military aid to Ukraine under Polish and NATO leadership.
Polish officials have emphasized that this repositioning does not indicate a withdrawal of U.S. forces from Poland. Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that the total number of U.S. troops in Poland remains approximately 10,000, with forces being redistributed within the country and certain duties transitioning to allied personnel from Norway, Germany, and the UK.
This strategic adjustment reflects a broader effort to streamline operations and reduce costs, with the U.S. Army Europe and Africa noting that the move is expected to save tens of millions of dollars annually.
The repositioning aligns with decisions made during the 2024 NATO summit in Washington, where the establishment of the NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU) mission was agreed upon to coordinate military supplies and training programs for Ukraine.
