Turkey wants no confrontation with Israel in Syria, Turkey foreign minister says
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan attends an interview with Reuters, in Brussels, Belgium on April 4, 2025.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that Turkey does not seek confrontation with Israel in Syria but expressed strong criticism of Israel’s recent airstrikes on Syrian military sites. Speaking during a NATO foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels, Fidan emphasized that such actions destabilize the region and undermine Syria’s sovereignty.

Fidan highlighted that Syria’s security should be determined by Syrians themselves, including any decisions regarding engagements with Israel. He warned that the destruction of Syria’s military capabilities hampers the country’s ability to counter threats, such as those posed by the Islamic State.

The Turkish foreign minister’s remarks come amid escalating tensions following Israeli airstrikes targeting Syrian bases, including T4, Palmyra, and Hama. These bases had been evaluated by Turkey for potential inclusion in a joint defense pact, signaling Ankara’s interest in expanding its military presence in Syria.

While Turkey and Israel have historically maintained a complex relationship, recent developments in Syria have further strained ties. Turkey supports a stable and unified Syria, whereas Israel has expressed concerns over the new Syrian leadership’s affiliations and intentions.

Fidan also addressed broader regional issues, including tensions with Iran. He rejected threats of military action and called for diplomatic solutions to avoid further instability in the Middle East.
