DAMASCUS / RIYADH – The Syrian Arab Republic has formally recognised the Republic of Kosovo as a sovereign, independent state, marking a significant diplomatic shift by the Syrian government during a trilateral meeting in Saudi Arabia’s capital.

The recognition was announced by Syria’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday, following talks held in Riyadh involving Syrian President Ahmed al‑Sharaa, Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, and Kosovan President Vjosa Osmani.

In its statement the Syrian Foreign Ministry said the decision reflects Damascus’s belief in “the right of peoples to self-determination” and emphasised its commitment to “promoting peace and stability in the Balkans and globally.” The ministry added that Syria looks forward to establishing full diplomatic relations with Kosovo and intends to develop cooperation in political, economic and cultural fields to serve the shared interests of both countries.

Kosovo’s response was one of gratitude and optimism. President Osmani called the recognition a “historic event” and thanked President al-Sharaa for his leadership and Saudi Arabia for brokering the agreement. She highlighted that both Kosovo and Syria are linked by histories of struggle and sacrifice in pursuit of freedom.

Saudi Arabia welcomed the development, with the kingdom’s Foreign Ministry expressing its hope that the move will strengthen cooperation between Syria and Kosovo and contribute to the prosperity of their peoples.

Diplomatic analysts describe the recognition as a marked departure from Syria’s previous policy. Under the prior regime, Syria had steadfastly opposed recognition of Kosovo and supported Serbia’s territorial claims. The timing and setting of the announcement indicate Saudi Arabia’s expanding role as mediator in regional diplomatic initiatives. The move means Kosovo is now officially recognised by at least 120 states, a milestone underlining Pristina’s ongoing efforts to bolster its international legitimacy.
