Sudanese army reclaims control of Khartoum airport from RSF
Khartoum International Airport

The Sudanese army announced it had recaptured Khartoum International Airport from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), marking a significant milestone in the nearly two-year civil war.

The airport, located in central Khartoum, had been under RSF control since the conflict’s onset in April 2023. Its strategic importance lies in its proximity to key government institutions, including the Republican Palace, which the army reclaimed just days prior.

Military sources reported that army units encircled the airport before launching an assault to expel RSF fighters. This operation is part of a broader campaign to regain control over central Khartoum and other territories previously held by the RSF.

The conflict, which began in April 2023, has resulted in a severe humanitarian crisis, with millions displaced and widespread destruction across Sudan. The RSF, initially part of the Sudanese military, broke away due to disagreements over integration into the regular army, leading to the current hostilities.

The army’s recent advances, including the capture of the airport and the Republican Palace, signify a potential turning point in the conflict. However, the RSF still controls significant portions of the country, particularly in the western regions, indicating that the path to peace remains fraught with challenges.
