At the 25th Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, member nations jointly denounced military strikes carried out by Israel and the United States against Iran in June, condemning them as illegal assaults on civilian and nuclear infrastructure. The leaders’ final statement labeled the attacks as blatant violations of international law and the United Nations Charter, betraying Iran’s sovereignty and endangering regional and global security. They demanded that the physical safety of nuclear facilities must be guaranteed at all times and reaffirmed that diplomatic and peaceful solutions remain the only paths forward.
An earlier SCO declaration, issued on June 14, echoed these sentiments—characterizing the Israel strikes as “blatant and unprovoked aggression” and similarly invoking the protection of nuclear energy infrastructure and adherence to international norms.
The comprehensive denouncement came alongside the signing of more than 20 cooperation agreementsspanning initiatives in security, counter-narcotics, artificial intelligence, green energy, sustainable trade, and a 10-year strategic plan—underscoring SCO’s commitment to broader regional coordination.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, emphasized that SCO members also rejected Europe’s selective invocation of UNSC Resolution 2231, including the “snapback” mechanism, unless applied in good faith. He noted that SCO countries uphold both the full implementation of the resolution and the condemnation of the U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran.
Altogether, the SCO summit underscored the bloc’s evolving geopolitical posture—reasserting its support for Iran, advancing cooperative strategic initiatives, and positioning itself as a counterbalance to Western unilateralism in international affairs.
