Putin orders spring military draft, calling up 160,000 Russians for service

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree initiating the annual spring military conscription, aiming to enlist 160,000 Russian citizens for mandatory service. This routine draft targets men aged 18 to 30 who are not part of the military reserve and are eligible for service. The conscription process is scheduled to occur between April and July 2025.

This move aligns with Russia’s ongoing efforts to bolster its military capabilities amid the protracted conflict in Ukraine. In September 2024, the Kremlin announced a 30% increase in the defense budget for 2025 and ordered the conscription of over 130,000 additional men. These actions underscore Russia’s commitment to sustaining its military operations despite significant human and economic costs.

The Russian General Staff has stated that conscripts will not be deployed to active combat zones in Ukraine. However, previous assurances have been met with skepticism, as reports have emerged of conscripts being sent to the front lines. Families of those drafted have expressed growing concern over the safety and well-being of their relatives.

The increased military spending and conscription efforts have financial implications for Russian citizens. Tax hikes targeting middle and upper classes, as well as corporations, are expected to generate additional revenue to support the expanded defense budget. Economists warn that these measures could exacerbate inflation, which has already reached 10%, further straining the Russian economy.
