Israel strikes Beirut for first time since Hezbollah ceasefire
Smoke rises following an Israeli airstrike on Dahiyeh, in the southern suburb of Beirut.

Israel has conducted an airstrike on Beirut’s southern suburb of Dahiyeh, marking the first such attack since the ceasefire with Hezbollah was established in November 2024. The Israeli military stated that the strike targeted a facility used by Hezbollah for storing drones.

The airstrike was preceded by the interception of two rockets fired from southern Lebanon into northern Israel earlier that day. While Israel attributes these rocket attacks to Hezbollah, the group has denied involvement, accusing Israel of seeking a pretext for continued aggression.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz have reiterated Israel’s commitment to act against threats from Lebanon and enforce peace. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the strike, urging international intervention to prevent further deterioration. French President Emmanuel Macron also criticized Israel’s actions, deeming them unjustified, and announced plans to discuss the situation with U.S. President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu.

This escalation raises concerns about the fragility of the current truce, which had ended a conflict resulting in over 3,900 deaths and the displacement of approximately 1 million people in Lebanon. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with calls for all parties to exercise restraint and adhere to the terms of the ceasefire to prevent a return to full-scale conflict.
