Israel has initiated a new ground offensive in the Gaza Strip, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict with Hamas. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) described the operation as a “limited ground operation” aimed at retaking the strategic Netzarim corridor, a key area dividing northern and southern Gaza.
The ground assault follows a series of intense airstrikes that, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, resulted in over 400 Palestinian deaths, including many women and children. This surge in violence has raised concerns among international observers about the potential for a full-scale war and the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has indicated that this operation is the beginning of more aggressive actions unless Hamas releases hostages and relinquishes control. He also warned Gaza residents to evacuate areas deemed as “zones of combat.”
The United Nations has reported casualties among its staff and has called for an investigation into attacks on its facilities. The renewed hostilities have disrupted ceasefire negotiations and exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, with thousands of northern Gaza refugees and 59 hostages still in Gaza facing increased peril.
Domestically, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing significant protests against the renewed offensive, highlighting deepening divisions within Israeli society over the government’s handling of the crisis.
