Iran warns of potential measures against IAEA amid external threats

Iran has issued a warning that it may take “deterrent measures” against the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), including expelling inspectors and ceasing cooperation, if external threats such as the risk of military action persist.

Ali Shamkhani, an adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, stated that continued external threats and the possibility of military attacks could lead to such actions. This announcement follows renewed warnings from U.S. President Donald Trump, who emphasized that failure to agree on a nuclear deal would endanger Iran, asserting his authority if upcoming talks in Oman, scheduled for Saturday, fail.

While the U.S. seeks direct negotiations, Iran insists on indirect dialogue through Omani mediation. The U.S. previously withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement during Trump’s earlier presidency, reinstating stringent sanctions. In response, Iran exceeded uranium enrichment limits set by the deal. Western countries suspect Iran may be pursuing nuclear weapons capabilities, though Tehran maintains its program is strictly for civilian energy use.

Additionally, Shamkhani suggested that Iran might relocate enriched material to undisclosed locations within the country if threats continue. This development underscores the escalating tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear program and the potential implications for international diplomatic efforts.
