On March 16, 2025, a missile launched from Yemen by the Houthi rebels landed in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula near Sharm el-Sheikh. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) are investigating whether Israel was the intended target.

This incident occurred shortly after the United States conducted significant airstrikes against Houthi positions in Yemen. The U.S. operation aimed to protect maritime freedom and international shipping routes in the Red Sea, following Houthi threats to attack vessels in the area. The aerial attacks targeted Houthi bases, leaders, and missile defenses, resulting in significant explosions around San’a, Sa’dah, and the Jeraf neighborhood. Reports revealed 31 civilian casualties and 101 injuries.
The Houthi rebels had previously issued warnings that any Israeli vessel in nearby Middle Eastern waters would be targeted, citing Israel’s blockade on aid to the Gaza Strip as justification. This threat affects key maritime routes and threatens revenue from Egypt’s Suez Canal.
The IDF had raised its level of alert for potential Houthi attacks, as they had threatened to resume missile and drone fire on Israel. The situation remains tense, with regional powers closely monitoring developments to prevent further escalation.
