China strongly opposes US tariffs, vows countermeasures - Commerce Ministry
China-US

China’s Ministry of Commerce has expressed strong opposition to the United States’ recent decision to impose additional tariffs on Chinese imports, labeling the move as “unilateral bullying” and a violation of international trade norms. In response, Beijing has vowed to implement countermeasures to safeguard its national interests.

The U.S. administration, under President Donald Trump, announced a sweeping 34% tariff on Chinese exports, adding to a prior 20% tariff, effectively totaling a 54% levy. This action is part of a broader strategy that includes a baseline 10% tariff on all trading partners and the closure of the “de minimis” loophole, which previously allowed small packages to enter duty-free from China and Hong Kong.

Chinese officials have criticized these measures, asserting that they contravene World Trade Organization (WTO) rules and undermine the principles of free and fair trade. The Ministry of Commerce stated that such actions “severely infringe the legitimate rights of relevant parties and represent a typical act of unilateral bullying.”

In retaliation, China has announced plans to impose tariffs of 15% on U.S. coal and liquefied natural gas, and 10% on oil and agricultural machinery. Additionally, Beijing has added certain U.S. companies to its Unreliable Entity List, launched an antitrust investigation into Google, and implemented export controls on specific metals, including tungsten.

The escalating trade tensions have raised concerns among international observers about potential disruptions to global supply chains and the broader economic impact. Analysts warn that continued escalation could lead to significant consequences for global markets and economic stability.

Both nations have signaled a willingness to engage in dialogue to address these disputes. A potential meeting between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping is anticipated in the coming months, which may provide an opportunity to negotiate and potentially de-escalate the ongoing trade conflict.
